Shahjahanpur district, a part of Bareilly division is a district of Uttar Pradesh with its administrative headquarters located at Shahjahanpur city. Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan, the sons of Dariya Khan, a soldier in the army of Mughal Emperor, Jahangir established the place of Shahjahanpur. In the regime of Shahjahan both Diler Khan and Bahadur Khan were appointed as dignitaries. Shahjahan satisfied with the services of Diler Khan gave him 17 villages as a gift to build the fort. Diler Khan then constructed a fort at Nainar Khera, a place located at the banks of the rivers Garrah and Khannaut. During the period of Indian struggle for independence, the contribution of Shahjahanpur to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 was incredible. Earlier, Shahjahanpur was under the Bareilly district. But the British Government established it as a separate district in the year 1813.

Naik Jadu Nath Singh, a very courageous soldier of Indian Army who fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 in Jammu & Kashmir was born on 21st November, 1916 at the Shahjahanpur town. He fought very bravely in the war but unfortunately he died. Later he was honoured by the gallantry awarded Param Vir Chakra for his valour in the war.

Geographically, the district lies at 27°88'N latitude, 79°92'E longitude and 485 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.35% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,388 sq kms. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 19th in the state and 270th in India. It is bounded by Philibit district and Bareilly district on the north, Farukkabad district and Hardoi district on the south, Lakhimpur Kheri district on the east and Budaun district on the west. The prominent rivers that flows through the district are Garra, Khannaut and Ramganga. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. The actual rainfall in the district was 856.0 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Sadar, Powayan, Tilhar and Jalalabad. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 6 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 4 sub-districts, 11 towns and 2,328 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 30,06,538 out of which 16,06,403 are males and 14,00,135 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 872 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 18.00% including 16.12% were males and 20.24% were females. The population density in the district is 685 persons per sq. kms. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 78,589 including 41,284 were males and 37,305 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 22,114 out of which 12,310 were males and 9,804 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 80.24% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Urdu with 91.29% and 7.25%.

The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture. Some of its chief agricultural products are gram, potato, millet and wheat. There is an army cantonment in the district since the Ordinance Clothing Factory is foremost clothing factory for defence forces. Most of the population in the district are engaged in agriculture since it is scantily industrialized. Some of its foremost industries include G. Surgivear, Janki Groups, Shriram Industries, Pashupatinath Industries, Khandelwal Industries, McDowell, Oswal Chemicals and Fertilizers, Durga Industries, K. D. Industries, etc. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 25,46,168 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 15,01,350 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 22,32,848 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 12,75,385 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 65,532 at Current Price and Rs. 37,431 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district provides platform for higher education. The reputed educational institutions in the district are Dindayal Upadhyay Rajkiya Degree College, Prem Kishan Khanna Rajkiya Degree College, Swami Shukdevanand Degree College, Arya Mahila Degree College, Ganna Kissan Degree College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 59.54% including 68.18% are males and 49.57% are females.

Jitin Prasada, an eminent Indian politician and a member of 14th Lok Sabha was born on 29th November, 1973 at Shahjahanpur town. During different periods of time he was served as the Minister of state with different portfolios. He is a member of Indian National Congress. Jitendra Prasada, an illustrious Indian politician and a member of 5th, 7th, 8th and 13th Lok Sabha was born on 12th November, 1938 at Shahjahanpur town. He was also served as a political advisor to two most prominent Prime Ministers of India i.e. Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and PV Narasimha Rao in 1994. He was a member of Indian National Congress.

During the year 2021, there were 58,306 domestic tourists and 5 foreign tourists who visited these places of the district. The district has many centres of attraction with historical and religious significance which allures numerous travellers from across the country as well as the world. Its notable places of interest are Hanuman Mandir, Kalibadi Mandir, Shaheed Dwar, Ram Prasad Bismil Smarak, Baba Vishwnath Mandir, Tulsi Math, Chunne Miyan's Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Alakhnath Temple, etc.
