About Rudraprayag District (Uttarakhand)
Rudraprayag district is a district of Uttarakhand with its administrative headquarters located at Rudraprayag town. Earlier, Rudraprayag district was a part of the districts of Chamoli and Tehri. Rudraprayag district was emerged as a separate district on 16th September, 1997 and it was carved out from the areas of the three adjoining districts which includes the whole of Augustmuni and Ukhimath block and part of Pokhri and Karnprayag block from Chamoli district, part of Jakholi and Kirtinagar block from Tehri Garhwal district and lastly the part of Khirsu block from Pauri Garhwal district. The district has some internationally famous places likewise Shri Kedarnath Temple at north, Madmaheshwar at east, Nagrasu at southern east and Shrinagar at extreme south. Even the sacred Mandakini River is also originated from the Kedarnath in the district.
Geographically, the district lies at 30°29'N latitude, 78°98'E longitude 895 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 57.58% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,984 sq km. and it is bounded by Uttarkashi district on the North, Pauri Garhwal district on the South, Chamoli district on the East and Tehri Garhwal district on the West. The climate of the district is not so hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1849.6 mm in the year of 2021-2022.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 blocks namely Augustmuni, Jakholi and Ukhimath. Moreover, it comprises 3 sub-districts, 2 towns and 688 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 2,42,285 out of which 1,14,589 are males and 1,27,696 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 1114 (females for every 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 6.53% including 6.56% were males and 6.50% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 99.13% of the total population. The population density in the district is 122 persons per sq. km. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 99.03%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 6,842 out of which 3,660 were males and 3,182 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 2,576 out of which 1,476 were males and 1,100 were females.
The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice, wheat, potato, pulses, vegetables, millets, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the framers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. The district is scantily industrialised. But the district is rich in mineral resources. Granite, hyalites, quartzite, etc are the commonly found mineral resources in the district. In the year 2017-18 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 2,71,316 lakhs at current price and Rs. 2,17,824 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2017-18 was Rs. 2,37,989 lakh at current price and Rs. 1,91,163 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2017-18 was Rs. 88,987 At Current Price and during the period 2016-17 was Rs. 66,770 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Sri A P Bahuguna Govt PG College is one of the recognised colleges in the district. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 81.3% including 93.9% are males and 70.35% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 1,70,933 including 91,803 are males and 79,130 are females.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Chandrashila, located at an altitude of 3679 m is the most reachable peak of the Himalayas of this place. It is the perfect destination for the scaling, skiing and trekking lovers. Furthermore, the Chandrashila peak is full of mesmerising natural sceneries with snow clad peaks. Deoria Tal, situated almost 2 km. away from the Sari village in the district has panoramic picturesque with forests all around. The amazing reflection of the mighty Chaukhamba peak in the lake draws a number of visitors to this place. Augustmuni, situated at a distance of 18 km. from the Rudraprayag town is the place where Rishi Agastya used to meditate during his lifetime. This place has a temple named Agasteshwar Mahadev temple which is dedicated to famous sage Agastya. Pilgrims from far off places comes to this temple to offer their prayers. Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the northern side of the district covers an area of 966 sq km. The sanctuary has abundant and diverse flora and fauna. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Guptkashi, Son Prayag, Khirsu, Chopta, Sandhi Sarovar, Vasuki Tal, etc.
